The ballet was first danced in 1841, but this tale of love, betrayal and redemption, still has the power to hold an audience enthralled
It is a staple in the repertoire of the company, and an audience favourite, and an ultimate test for the company’s corps de ballet. Under the direction of the artistic director Wayne Eagling, he shows off the excellent female corps, with two significant male roles, that of Albrecht and Hilarion.
‘Giselle’ is a ‘holy ballet’, staged by Makarova, and undeniably an important production. Makarova has chosen two Monet paintings as basis for the sets. Natalia Makarova, the Soviet-Russian born Prima Ballerina, and her performances have set standards of artistry and aristocracy of dance which mark her as one of the finest ballerinas of her generation. She has also won awards as an actress.
