Sweden’s national ballet company, where the first Swedish court ballet dates from 1638 and was arranged by the French ballet master Antoine de Beaulieu.

The present company dates back to 1773 when, King Gustav III (the Theatre King), founded the Swedish opera with its small ballet company of 24 dancers as part of his national cultural project in response to the French and Italian dominance in the field. Today it has taken on a more vital role in Stockholm’s art scene.
